If you hit your toe, maybe your arm, maybe neck, you probably strained the joint. Examples would be standing up underneath something and smashing your head and neck, slamming your finger into the wall, etc..
It may be referred to as a jammed finger or sometimes a "stinger". What it is really is a strain or sprain. You irritate the joint capsule, and/or muscles around it, it may be swollen, motion may be diminished temporarily.
So like any other strain the R.I.C.E. acronym works - Rest, Ice, Compress, and Elevate. This works well for many areas of the body, if it doesn't then do what you can. A finger for example is already elevated compared to the rest of the body but you may want to immobilize it for a period of time.
