Many of of think of our stomach as a steel drum - impenetrable, and able to withstand anything. I got thinking about this after I saw a commercial with a man taking a cannon ball shot to the gut. What I'm going to be taking about here is injuring our gut starting from the inside. Our normal gut flora is known to help us to produce many of our essential vitamins and nutrients.
A recent experiment showed a college student to have killed about 40% of the normal gut bacteria by eating McDonald's for 10 straight days. This student, Tom, said he felt fine for the first 3 days and then felt very fatigued and lethargic. His friends noted that he started "to take on a strange grayish appearance." Tom ate Big Macs, fries, chicken nuggets, and drank soda.
We all can guess that this much fast food can be very bad for us. I myself, playing the Monopoly game, at more than I should have over a couple weeks. I didn't necessarily eat it for ten straight days, or eat it exclusively, but I can tell you that I started to get sick.
It's one thing to get a pain unintentionally or that's out of our control, but this was self inflicted pain...
