With a busy life making time for exercise can be difficult. That is why for me, walking is the best form of exercise. I love walking because it doesn't require any special equipment or having to be in a special location to work out. The simple act of walking can help you lose weight, help you better your mood, help you control diabetes and lower your blood pressure. Sure, you can use medication for all those things as well but then you have to deal with the side effects. For me personally I walk to help manage my weight after the birth of my baby. I went from weighing 150 pounds after pregnancy to my usual weight of 135 pounds.
If you walk correctly and you wear the right type of shoes you should have no side effects with walking.A study published in the Journal of PLOS medicine showed that adding 150 minutes of brisk walking each week to your routine can add 3.5 years to your life. Walk with someone or maybe your pet dog - Studies have shown that if you walk with somebody or walk your dog for example you are more likely to walk.
What are all things that Walking Helps? First, walking is good for brain health. Studies have shown that regular exercise is one of the best ways to keep away diseases such as Alzheimer's and Dementia away. In fact a study done at the University of Pittsburgh showed that walking for at least 6 miles a week was linked to a less brain shrinkage for seniors. Second, start walking to maintain healthy knees and bones: walking is a form of weight bearing exercise. This weight bearing exercise prevents conditions such as osteoporosis or osteoarthritis from setting in. Third, walking can also reduce cancer risks in men and women and studies have shown this especially for breast cancer and prostate cancer. Fourth, A brisk walk and also prevent diseases like diabetes. A simple 20 to 30 minute quick minute walk and help to lower blood sugar for 24 hours.Fifth, Walking for 30 minutes lowers your risk for heart disease and stroke because it keeps cholesterol and blood pressure at the right levels which is good for overall heart health. Finally, I think the most important benefit of walking is that is simply improves your mood. Why take depression medication when a brisk walk can help boost your mood.
For myself personally, I invested in a fit bit which keeps track of how many steps I do in a day. This keeps me motivated to walk and I regularly do challenges with my cousins (literally all over the world). The fit bit default is 10,000 steps which is roughly 5 miles of walking. Recently I have upped the default amount to 12,000 steps which has helped my overall health. For this Mother's Day I treated myself to a new pair of Nike Flyknit shoes, a recommendation from a friend who also regularly exercises. You don't need fancy shoes to walk, but i don't mind investing a little in my health. It's well worth it ! Happy Mothers Day to All of My Readers !!
